A Keyless Life? - How to Achieve It

For Serious Homeowners seeking a Practical Understanding.

A Life Without Keys

It is now possible to access your home, car and workplace with no keys.

How is it done?

A box of keys

Car

Digital car keys are now a thing. Tesla introduced this in 2017.

This “phone-as-a-key” (PaaK) functionality is managed within your Apple/Android wallet. This works with the phone in your pocket.

A lot of car manufacturers offer this feature on their later models.

There are also “Physical Card Keys” which are likely to just be passing fad. Tesla, Kia and Hyundai have offered these physical thin credit card sized keys for some time. These cards use Near Field Communications (NFC) technology.

House

The key and lock company Schlage offers a range of “smart locks” which allow you to use your Apple/Android home keys, and they connect with Ring and Alexa.

Work

Schlage offers a commercial line of lock hardware with “Mobile BLE” (Bluetooth Low Energy) technology which allows keyless entry into these locks.

While all of this hardware is in the first few years of widespread use, we have reach a point in time where you could have no keys with you when you leave your home!

Note: we mention Schlage a lot here, and this is due to the fact that other manufacturers appear to be using proprietary apps and/or paid subscription services to handle mobile device keyless entry. While these other brands may work well, Schlage is offering products that will just work with the phones and apps that are already in most of our pockets!
