A Better Mousetrap & Unidentified Sewage Smells
For Serious Homeowners seeking a Practical Understanding.

What Is It?
Welcome to a new section of the newsletter! Each week we will cover a home item which you may not be familiar with.
An “Air Admittance Valve” (Also may be called a Studor Vent, Studor AAV, Redi-Vent or Mini-Vent)
The cap on the top of the drain pipe in the photo above is designed to allow air INTO the drain pipe. It is called a Air Admittance Valve.
Whenever you send water down your drain pipes, negative pressure in the pipe can be created and air needs to be let into the pipe to alleviate this pressure.
Normally the air is obtained from a “stack vent” which is a pipe that goes up to above your roof. If such a pipe can’t be run to the roof when there is no wall nearby, for example in a center island in your kitchen, a Air Admittance Valve is the solution.
Sometimes these valves go bad as the valve material inside fails. This can allow air to ESCAPE the pipe, leading to an intermittent sewage smell in the area of the valve.
