Attic Ventilation - A Deep Dive
Part 3 of 3 - How do we ventilate attics
Last week we discussed how we move air through an attic.
Today we will look at some of the products that allow this ventilation.
How much ventilation do you need?
Best practice is to provide 1 square feet of ventilation opening per 150 square feet of attic floor area.
Half of this ventilation opening should be soffit vents and the other half roof/ridge vents. Shoot to make this balanced.
This would mean that if you had an attic with a floor area of 1,500 square feet, you would want 5 square feet of soffit vent opening, and 5 square feet of roof/ridge vent opening.
Soffit Vents
Below are some examples of commonly used soffit vents today.

A Hardie soffit vent. Note the many small round holes.

A LP soffit vent. Note the many slots.

A Georgia Pacific Vinyl soffit vent. Note the many small round holes.

A Tamlyn continuous soffit vent. Note how this XSV vent is supported by the soffit panels.
Ridge and Roof Vents
Below are some examples of commonly used ridge and roof vents today.

GAF Cobra Rigid Vent 3 - Ridge Vent

A Gibraltar Airhawk Roof Vent
Options for letting the air out of the attic are as follows:
Ridge vents
Roof (box) vents
Gable Vents
Powered or Non-Powered Fan/Turbine Type Units
We do not show any examples of 3 or 4 here. Gable and/or fan type units are not as effective as ridge and roof vents.
